Every load needs a clear path to the ground.

Roof. Frame. Connection. Foundation.

Every job needs a clear path to an answer.

Chartered structural engineering, from Huddersfield.

I design steelwork and civil works for fabricators, industrial clients, architects, and builders. Connection design too, where the quote includes it. You deal with me from start to finish.

Civi Struct Workshop 01

“Clear calcs, clear drawings, and one engineer who picks up the phone.” Paul Kangunga, CEng MIStructE

One engineer, start to finish.

Civi Struct Workshop is a one-person practice. The engineer you brief is the engineer who designs your work and signs it off.

Sized to what it carries.

Steel costs money. I size each member to the loads it carries, and the calculations show the working.

The load path 02

Four parts. One route to the ground.

A structure only works when every part hands its load to the next. I can design the whole route, or the part you need.

Press and hold the button to reveal all four parts. They also appear on their own if you prefer reduced motion.

The industrial side 04

Most of what I design never gets lived in.

Much of my work has been on industrial sites: defence, petrochemical, gas, and heavy industry. That work has a different shape to a house extension. The loads are awkward, the equipment was bought before anyone thought about supporting it, and the paperwork has to survive a client’s own independent check.

01

The frame under the plant.

Process equipment arrives as a package with a weight, a footprint, and an assumption that somebody will carry it. I design the skid frames, the module framing, the vessel and pump supports, the pipe racks, and the access steelwork around them, sized for lifting and transport as well as for standing still.

02

Where piping meets structure.

Pipe stress analysis produces support loads. Those loads have to land on something that exists. I review the stress report, tell you whether the anchors and guides it assumes can actually be built, and then design the steel and concrete that takes them.

I work to the Eurocodes, and to AISC and ASCE where the client’s specification is American. Both, on the same job, when that is what the package needs.

How I work 05

From drawings to a buildable answer.

  1. Send the drawings. Email the drawings, photos, or brief. A complete brief saves a round of questions.
  2. I scope it. I read the brief and tell you what I need and what the job covers.
  3. You get a written quote. It comes with my terms of appointment. Work starts when you accept in writing.
  4. I design and check. Calculations to the Eurocodes, with drawings the fabricator and the builder can work from.
  5. Set out for Building Control. Calculations set out for submission.

Fees 07

Every job is quoted in writing.

The quote sets out what is included. I am not VAT registered, so no VAT is added.

Questions 08

The questions people ask.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the job. Send the drawings and I will quote in writing. No VAT is added.

Who does the work?

I do. Civi Struct Workshop is a one-person practice, and I am a Chartered Structural Engineer, CEng MIStructE.

Do you design the steel connections?

Yes, where the quote includes it. The quote says which parts of the design are mine.

Where do you work?

I am based in Huddersfield, HD8, and site visits start from there. Desk-based calculations can be for anywhere in the UK. Building Regulations work covers England and Wales.

Do you work on industrial and process sites?

Yes. That is where most of my career has been. Skid and equipment frames, pipe racks, and the civils around energy and power infrastructure. If you are a package builder or a plant operator, that is the work I do.

Can you work to American codes?

Yes. Eurocodes and the UK National Annexes by default, and AISC and ASCE where the client’s specification calls for them.

Do you do pipe stress analysis?

No, not as a service in its own right. What I do is read the stress report properly, challenge the support loads it assumes, and design the structure that has to take them. Plenty of stress reports pass loads downstream to a structure nobody has designed yet. That is the gap I fill.

How quickly can you turn it round?

There is no standard turnaround for this work. The date depends on the job and on receiving all the information. Ask, and I will give you a date for your job.

What do you not do?

I do not carry out building condition surveys, pre-purchase surveys, or reports for mortgage lenders. For a whole-house check before you buy, a RICS Home Survey is the usual route.

I am a homeowner. Can you help?

Yes, through The Beam Doctor, my residential service at thebeamdoctor.co.uk.
